CATS
I saw CATS for the first time 24 years ago, and it had been playing for 5 years already. The sets were incredible, and the singing went off like clockwork. The Orchestra overwhelmed the vocals, which is sad because a large part of CATS is the lyric derived from T.S. Eliott's Book of Practical Cats. This was a fairly good production, with lighting and special effects that were good for a show coming through Portland for less than a week. Most of the audience missed the cleverness of the lyric because they couldn't hear it. It was a lovely evening with Grizabella, the glamour cat, stealing the show with her powerful version of "Memory".
